Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Puddle of Mudd-Day 24

After the Foo Fighters beat Goldfinger by a vote of 5-1, we move on to our final bracket quarterfinal, rock legends Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. newbies Puddle of Mudd. The Red Hot Chili Peppers have been for more than 25 years now, and have continued to go strong. They got started in 1983, and haven't let up since. They released their first album in 84', a self-titled effort, which didn't get much success. However, the band didn't let up, and continued to put out more albums. The next two, Freaky Styley and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, continued to showcase the band's funky style of music, but still saw limited commercial success. Soon came Mother's Milk, which became the Peppers' biggest album, headlined with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground". Then, in 1991, the band finally hit the scene. Blood Sugar Sex Magik became a huge hit, with such singles as "Give It Away", "Under the Bridge", and "Suck My Kiss". The album continued to top the charts, and the Peppers became a household name. However, the band soon fell upon a dark era, when guitarist John Frusciante left the band after the Blood Sugar tour. The band was forced to find a replacement in Dave Navarro, of Jane's Addiction fame. The chemistry with the new guitarist didn't seem to flow, and the result was One Hot Minute, an album that didn't nearly see the success of Blood Sugar and had a different style to it. Once the tour was over, Navarro left the band because of band tensions, and frontman Anthony Kiedis confronted Frusciante about rejoining. Frusciante, who had faced the verge of death due to drug addiction, finished up in rehab and rejoined the band in 1998. The result was Californication, the turn around album for the band. The album was an instant success, and showcased a softer and melodic side to the band not seen on previous albums. With Frusciante back, the band was once again in their prime. They released the follow-up to Cali in 2002 called By The Way, which can be considered to be the band's most mellow album to date. However, the Peppers didn't let up, and released a huge, double disc album in 2006 called Stadium Arcadium. The album was a masterpiece, and showcased the blend of the band's new and old styles. There was the funk for the old fans, and the softer stuff for the new fans. Although the Peppers are taking a break from music right now, they show no signs of letting up and promise to continue to make great music. As for our ladder, we have 00's modern rock band Puddle of Mudd, who saw big success in 2001 with the release of Come Clean. It produced hits like "Blurry" and "She Hates Me". Although the band kept quiet for a few years after that, we came back in 2007 with "Famous", which seems to be a modest hit for the band.

That's it for me...voting time!

Foo Fighters vs. Goldfinger-Day 23

After Audioslave took care of System of a Down by a vote of 4 to 1, we move on to our next matchup. First up are the Foo Fighters, who have become one of the biggest names in modern rock. The band formed after ex-Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl put out essentially a self-titled album under the name "Foo Fighters". Grohl played all instruments and once the record was put out, he went out to form a band and tour the album. Band chemistry seemed to flow extremely well, and soon they were back in the studio to record the band's most well known album, "The Colour and the Shape". Then the Foos exploded into the modern rock scene. They pumped out hits like "My Hero", "Monkey Wrench", and "Everlong". Since then, the band has continued to pump out excellent albums, with each having it's own twist. There is Nothing Left to Lose added a laid back, southern rock type feel, One by One showed off the band's harder side to rock, In Your Honor saw the band turn to a duel release with half acoustics, which leads us to "Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace", the band's latest release. The Foos show no sign of letting up, and seem to now be in their prime. As for Goldfinger, they are one of the stronger bands out of the 90's punk rock era. Integrating an element of ska into their music, the band created a sound different than the rest. The band released a new album recently called "Hello Destiny...", which tries to mix in the band's new sound with the band's old sound.

Here we go...time to vote!

Audioslave vs. System of a Down-Day 22

After Pearl Jam defeated Soundgarden by a vote of 4-2, we move on to yet another good western conference matchup. Our first band, Audioslave, was formed after Rage Against the Machine split up. The instrumentalists from Rage went out to find a vocalist, and came upon Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Within a matter of months, a new supergroup emerged, calling themselves "Audioslave". The band's first record was a hit, producing hits like "Cochise", "Show Me How to Live", and most especially "Like a Stone". The band didn't stop there, though, unlike most supergroups would. They went on to tour the album, and eventually, they released another new album in 2005 called Out of Exile. The band then committed to a "album every year" basis, and released "Revelations" in 2006. With touring and recording, the band was certainly very busy. However, in February 2007, Chris Cornell announced that he would be leaving Audioslave, leading to the disbandment of the band. The instrumentalists went to rejoin Zack de la Rocha in Rage, and frontman Cornell moved on to some solo work. As for our other band, they became one of the biggest names in rock in the 2000's, just as Audioslave had. System of a Down was lead by one of the most recognizable lead singers of the era, Serj Tankian. The band's energy poured into their music, releasing numerous albums through the early 2000's. Eventually, in 2005, they band decided to release two albums, each six months apart. Although they were both successes, that was the last we ever heard of the band, as they had gone on hiatus. Although Serj continues to say that the band will never spilt up, there doesn't seem to be a sign of life for System of a Down.

Pearl Jam vs. Soundgarden-Day 21

After Tenacious D owned Jet by the unanimous vote of 4-0, we move on to our first western conference quarterfinal with the eastern final four set. Right now, however, we have a true grunge battle straight out of the 90's. Our first band, Pearl Jam, hit the airwaves with their first album, "Ten", in 1991. Following the footsteps of Nirvana, Pearl Jam went on to produce numerous efforts throughout the 90's, becoming one of the biggest bands of that era. They produced many radio friendly hits as well, like "Even Flow", "Jeremy", "Daughter", and "Better Man". The band has continued strong through the new millennium, with their latest record being a self-titled effort. The new record showcases that the band's original style is still alive, and they plan to keep rocking for years to come. On the other hand we have other band straight out of the grunge era, Soundgarden. Although the originated in the late 80's, they broke through 1991's Badmotorfinger and 1994's Superunknown, especially the latter. Frontman Chris Cornell led the band with strong vocals and helped produce many hit singles, for example, "Black Hole Sun", "Spoonman", and "Fell on Black Days". No one knew much about the band until grunge rocked the world, which is when the band's popularity soared. In the late 90's, however, the band was found in turmoil, which eventually led to the break up of the band. Cornell, of course, went on to join former Rage members to found Audioslave.

This next one should be great. A true grunge battle...vote now!

Jet vs. Tenacious D-Day 20

After The Offspring defeated The Killers by a vote of 3 to 1, we move on to our final eastern conference quarterfinal, Jet vs. Tenacious D. The former saw their first success with hit single "Are You Gonna Be My Girl", along with their first album, Get Born, in general. The band followed up with a new album in 2006, Shine On. Although it was not received as well as their first album, it was a solid effort for the band. They plan to have their third album out sometime soon. On the other hand, we have Tenacious D, created by the duo of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The band released their first, self-titled album in 2001, and saw success with their hit "Tribute". The band would continue to play live shows throughout the years, but obviously frontman Jack Black has his acting career to take care of as well. The band released a soundtrack to their very own movie in 2006 called The Pick of Destiny. The movie showcases the two band members trying to find a magical guitar pick. Although there is nothing planned for Tenacious D, the option is always open for "the greatest band in the world", or so they proclaim.

Time for the vote!

The Killers vs. The Offspring-Day 19

After Nirvana slightingly beating Boston by a vote of 4-3, we move on to our next quarterfinal matchup-The Killers and The Offspring. The former band hails from Las Vegas, Nevada and came on to the scene with their debut record "Hot Fuss" in 2004. The record produced numerous hits for the band, including "Somebody Told Me" and "Mr. Brightside". The band released a follow-up album in 2006 called Sam's Town, which showcased the band's maturity from the first record. They plan to have some new music out sometime later this year. On the other hand, we have punk rock legends, The Offspring. After releasing two earlier records, Self Titled and Ignition, The Offspring saw their first commercial success with 1994's Smash. The record produced numerous hit singles like "Come Out and Play" and "Self Esteem". However, the band didn't stop there. They continued to produce many more albums, and many more hits. After Smash came Ixnay on the Hombre, which many consider to be the band's greatest album to date. Then came Americana and Splinter, which continued the band's success. Splinter was released in 2003, and the band has not put out another new record since. However, they have said that "Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace", the latest installment from the band, will be a very promising effort. The album will be released on June 17th, and should be another great installment in The Offspring library.

That's it for me...time to vote!

Boston vs. Nirvana-Day 18

After Metallica defeated Rage Against the Machine in our first bracket quarterfinal by a vote of 6-3, we move on to a very interesting matchup. Our first band hit the scene in the 70's with a debut self-titled album that would soon become one of the greatest rock records of all time. With such hits as "More Than a Feeling", "Peace of Mind", and "Foreplay/Long Time", the band became one of the biggest in the rock world. Boston followed up with two more records, "Don't Look Back" and "Third Stage", each of which did not see the success as the self-titled debut. Lead singer Brad Delp departed from the band after Third Stage due to prior committments, although the band continued on and released a fourth album-"Walk On"-in 1994. However, the band was never the same without their frontman, who unfortunately took his own life early last year. Although original band member Tom Scholz remains, the fate of the band is now uncertain. All we know is that boston will go down as one of the biggest names in classic rock. Our second band, on the other hand, is the biggest name in grunge rock of the 1990's-Nirvana. Nirvana started off in the late 1980's and released their first album-"Bleach"- in 1989. Though the album went relatively unnoticed-many consider it to be the band's best work. The breakthough success, and the formation of 90's grunge, came in 1991 with the release of "Nevermind". The success of the record was driven by lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", a song that started a revolution . Although the record had many numerous hit songs, none matched the success of "Teen Spirit". Many other bands on the 1990's, for example Pearl Jam and Stone Temple Pilots, followed Nirvana's success. In 1993 the band released a heavier record called "In Utero", which was a moderate success. After touring the album, in early 1994-shocking news hit the world. Frontman Kurt Cobain took his life in his Seattle apartment, which ended Nirvana.

I find this next matchup to be very ironic, as both bands had 3 main albums, and both lead singers committed suicide. This should be an interesting one...vote now.

Metallica vs. Rage Against the Machine-Day 17

We start off our bracket quarterfinals with an awesome matchup-Metallica vs. Rage Against the Machine. The former band dominated most of the 80's with numerous excellent records, for example "Ride the Lightning" and "Master of Puppets". However, they are most known for their "Black Album", which came out in '91. It provided tracks such as "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven". Since that record was released, Metallica has continued to go strong through the 90's and into the 00's. The band's latest attempt, St. Anger, has been dismissed as a lackluster effort by many fans. However, the band has said they will release a brand new album around September, which the band says will return to their former style. As for the latter, Rage hit the scene in the early 90's and were different than the rest of the grunge era. Lead singer Zack de la Rocha's loud, anti-political lyrics and guitarist Tom Morello's insane guitar solos drive each of their tracks. The band released four albums in their less than 10 year existance and produced many hit singles, but the band eventually split up in the early 2000's. De la Rocha decided to take some time for some solo work, while the rest of the band formed supergroup Audioslave with Soundgarden's Chris Cornell. Although the band didn't last long, they produced three excellent records together. Once the band split in 2007, the remaining members of Rage have rejoined de la Rocha and have started to play a bunch of live shows around the world.

This is going to be a really interesting matchup. Time to vote...check out the sidebar!

Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Guns n' Roses-Day 16

After Puddle of Mudd defeated Everclear by a vote of 3-1, we move on to our final first round matchup, which may be the biggest. We have two real rock legend going up against each other in this last round-Red Hot Chili Peppers and Guns n' Roses. The Chili Peppers have been around since 83' and they are still providing awesome funk rock. The first few Chili Pepper albums go relatively unnoticed due to low commercial success, but once 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik came around, they become a phenomenon. With hits such as Give It Away and Under the Bridge, the Chili Peppers became one of the biggest names in rock. However, the band hit a speed bump when guitarist John Frusciante left the band after the Blood Sugar tour due to drug addiction. The band recruited Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro to take his place and produced 1995's One Hot Minute. The style of the album was quite different than Blood Sugar, and was not nearly as popular. Chemistry between the new band members did not seem to flow well, as Navarro left the band in 1998. Afterwards, frontman Anthony Kiedis confronted Frusciante who was going through rehab, and asked him if he would like to rejoin the band. He said yes, and the band created 1999's Californication, which instantly became a huge success. Lead single Scar Tissue received much popularity, as well as many other songs on the album. The album also introduced a more mellow side to the band, with a good amount of softer sounding songs on the album. The album has become known as the "comeback album", as since then, the band has seen renewed popularity and has produced two more excellent albums, By The Way and Stadium Arcadium. The latter is the band's most recent installment, which is a true representation of the band's legacy. The double disc, 28 song set includes songs that represent the band's mellow side, and the band's funk driven side, which makes it a one of a kind masterpiece. Our other band hit the spotlight in 1987 with the release of Appetite for Destruction. The album produces many hit songs, from "Sweet Child o' Mine" to "Welcome to the Jungle", and still is proven to be one of the best rock albums ever created. After the debut album, GnR produced a few more albums, none seeing the spotlight like Appetite for Destruction did. Over the years many of the band's members have left and moved on, but lead singer Axl Rose has stayed put. He has been working the band's newest album, "Chinese Democracy", for years now, and still no release date has been set.

This matchup is between two of the greatest rock bands ever...but now it is time to vote!

Everclear vs. Puddle of Mudd-Day 15

After Goldfinger edged out DragonForce by a vote of 3-2, we move on to another one of our final preliminary matchups. Our first band started off in the grunge days of the 90s, which seemed to parallel their style in their first few records. The band has produced a number of hits over the years, from "Father of Mine" to "Wonderful". Although two of the bands members left after a supporting tour in 2003, lead singer Art Alexakis continued the band with new musicians, and released a brand new album in 2006. On the other hand, we have alternative rockers Puddle of Mudd who have seen success throughout the 00s. Originally the band hit the charts with such songs as "Blurry" and "She Hates Me" from their debut album Come Clean in 2001. Since then, the band has released two more albums, specifically 2007's "Famous".

Time to vote...

DragonForce vs. Goldfinger-Day 14

After the Foo Fighters beat the Eagles by a vote to 4-2, we head into one of our final preliminary matchups, DragonForce vs. Goldfinger. The former's style is very guitar heavy with incredible riffs, giving off a strong resemblance to metal. They have seen success through the game Guitar Hero III, which features their song "Through the Fire and Flames". The song is so difficult, they couldn't even feature it in the main game. As for Goldfinger, they are another band part of the California punk scene. Originally having hits like "Superman" and a cover of "99 Red Balloons", the band has strayed away from commercial success recently with the release of their 2005 album "Disconnection Notice". Enough talk...time to vote! Check out the sidebar...

Foo Fighters vs. Eagles-Day 13

After System of a Down beat up Breaking Benjamin in out last round, we move on to another rather interesting Western Conference match-up. Dave Grohl formed the Foo Fighters a few years after the disbandment of Nirvana. The band's debut record showcased Grohl on all insutrments, and included songs he wrote during the Nirvana days. After that, Dave assembled a band among friends of his, who would eventually call themselves the Foo Fighters, and toured the album. After all that was said and done, the band recorded "The Colour and the Shape", who many still believe to be the band's greatest album. Then on, the Foos have been a force in today's modern rock, with six excellent albums to date. With their most recent endeavor, the band has favored a more acoustic side to their music. They have been begun to play a set of acoustic songs during their concerts. Overall, the Foo Fighters have matched the success of Nirvana had back in the day, and plan to surpass it. Our other band is classic rockers the Eagles. Truly an example of rock's classic bands, the Eagles have reached much success over the years. Even though they have been around for quite a while now, they continue to tour and provide rock to their fans. This next one will be close...time to vote!

System of a Down vs. Breaking Benjamin-Day 12

After Audioslave took care of Smashing Pumpkins, we head into a matchup between two fairly recent bands. First off we have System of a Down, a heavy alternative band driven by the vocals of Serj Tankian. System put out quite a few records before going on hiatus after 2005's Hypnotize. With all of the band members going on to new, different projects, a System reunion doesn't seem to be in the near future. However, the band's frontman continues to say that despite their different endeavors, they will "always be System of a Down". On the other hand, we have Pennsylvania natives Breaking Benjamin, who have been a strong force in today's alternative rock. With three strong albums so far, the band's guitar riffs and lyrics drive their tracks. Time to get to the voting...check out the sidebar!

Audioslave vs. Smashing Pumpkins-Day 11

After a nailbiter between Soundgarden and Linkin Park, with the former coming victorious, we pit a rock supergroup of the 00s versus an alternative rock group out of the 90s. After Rage Against the Machine split up in the early 00s and leader singer Zack de la Rocha went to do some solo work, the rest of the band came upon Chris Cornell, former Soundgarden singer. Putting together the strong vocals of Chris Cornell and the instrumentalists of Rage formed a brand new supergroup. Although the band only lasted 3 albums, they produced a wide range of hit songs, driven by Cornell's lyrics and Morello's guitar solos. On the other band we have the Smashing Pumpkins, who started out during the grunge era. However, they have seemed to change their style over their last few albums. This should be an interesting matchup...check it out in the side bar!

Soundgarden vs. Linkin Park-Day 10

After Pearl Jam handed it to Finger Eleven in a nearly unanimous vote, we move on to our second Western Conference matchup, we move on to a battle between one of the finest grudge groups of the 90s versus one of the most popular modern groups of the 00s. First we have the group strongly lead by the vocals of Chris Cornell, Soundgarden. Although Soundgarden originally gained success once grudge really hit in 91 with Nevermind, they were around for at least half of the 80s. In 1994, they put out what could be called one of the best records of the 90s, Superunknown. It perfected the group's sound they formed with their previous three records, and did very well commercially with lead singles "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman". As for our second band, we have a band who brings a certain experimental element to their music, Linkin Park. First gaining success in the early 00s with hit single "In the End", Linkin Park has put out three hit records so far, with their most recent, "Minutes to Midnight", changing the style they had on the original two records by adding more ballads, and even guitar solos. This next matchup should be an interesting one...let's get to voting!

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Pearl Jam vs. Finger Eleven-Day 9

For our first Western Conference matchup, we have one of the greatest (and surviving) bands of the grunge 90s going against one of the most popular bands of the 00s. Pearl Jam, following the success of Nirvana, released their first album "Ten" in '91, which instantly became a best seller. They've been supplying new albums ever since, and all of them have kept the same style of music. Driven by the vocals of Eddie Vedder and the strong guitar riffs of Mike McCready, PJ has become one of the strongest bands of the last decade. On the other hand, we have Finger Eleven, who have been around for a while now, but more recently they have achieved commercial success with their song "Paralyzer". The band over the years has changed their style, for better or worse. This next one should be good. We're back to the sidebar poll...vote now!!

Pearl Jam-Life Wasted Live

Eastern Conference Preliminaries Round-Up

After our first round of preliminary match ups, eight bands have succeeded in their head to head match up. In case you forgot, the winners are...

Metallica
Rage Against the Machine
Boston
Nirvana
The Killers
The Offspring
Jet
Tenacious D

And that's it...get ready for the Western Conference Prelims...available soon! First up...Pearl Jam vs. Finger Eleven!

Tenacious D vs. Incubus-Day 8

Last round we saw Jet pull off a win versus punk legends Social Distortion by a vote of 4-2. Next up, we have our last battle in the Eastern Conference Preliminaries-Tenacious D vs. Incubus. The "Greatest Band in the World" faces off against the modern rockers of the 90s and 00s. While one would claim Tenacious D is nothing more than a gimmick by actor Jack Black, the two man band seems to take their music seriously, with two studio albums under their belt, and even their own movie. One can't deny the success of the band, perhaps due to the amount of publicity of the band's music. This round they face off against a band who has proven themselves to be one of the greatest bands going today. Incubus integrates different styles into their music, which gives them a certain uniqueness. It should be an interesting battle...will the "greatest band in the world" prevail as they claim to be, or is there an upset in the future? Vote now!

Which band owns?
Tenacious D

Jet vs. Social Distortion-Day 7

Last round we had The Offspring defeating Rise Against by an almost unanimous vote of 6-2. Next up is new alternative phenom Jet against one of the oldest punk rock bands in the land, Social Distortion. Again, we see a classic battle of the new and the old, although Social D is still together and plans to release a new album sometime this year. Jet went mainstream when their song "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" hit airwaves, and they've been popular ever since. As for Social Distortion, they've been rocking for more than 25 years, which is an amazing accomplishment. Anyway, it is time to vote! Will the old or the new prevail? Vote in the sidebar!

Rise Against vs. The Offspring-Day 6

Last round we had our first upset in Rate the Rock with the Killers overcoming Green Day by a vote of 5-2. Next up is a match up between a band that has obtained success in the 2000's, Rise Against, versus one of the great punk rock bands of the 90's, The Offspring. Although Rise Against is a relatively new band, energy is what fuels their songs, along with catchy guitar riffs and political bashing lyrics. The Offspring, on the other hand, is one of the founders of 90's punk. Catching success after 94's "Smash", The Offspring has remained strong throughout the years with numerous albums and barely changing their style. Both bands are due out for a new album this year. Will the old prevail, or will the newcomer rise? Vote now in the sidebar!

Monday, March 3, 2008

The Killers vs. Green Day-Day 5

After our closest matchup yet with Nirvana edging out Stone Temple Pilots by a single vote (4-3), we move on to our 5th matchup-The Killers vs Green Day. While the Killers have been one of the more popular alt-rock bands this decade, Green Day has been around for quite a while. Originally part of the punk rock bands to see mainstream success in the 1990s, the band has recently changed their style and since their popularity has been renewed. There's people who like/dislike the new stuff, so it'll be interesting to see how that plays into their decision. If there's a band who has anything to prove in this round, it's the Killers. They are still starting out as a band with only two records released so far, so it'll be interesting to see how they match up with Green Day.

Nirvana vs. Stone Temple Pilots-Day 4

After Weezer took a beating from rock legend Boston (5-2), it's time to enter a true battle of grudge rock. Nirvana, the ultimate founders of grudge rock in the 90s, will face off a band you formed quickly after Nirvana hit the music scene, Stone Temple Pilots. Although Nirvana is certainly more well known than STP, both fall upon the title of top bands of the 90s. Unfortunately both met the same fate in disbandment, both due to different reasons of course. Although both bands' legacies have lived on past both original groups. Dave Grohl, Nirvana's drummer, went to form of today's best modern rock bands, the Foo Fighters. As for STP, frontman Scott Weiland collaborated with guitar legend Slash to form supergroup Velvet Revolver. On a good note, STP will have a reunion tour in 2008 which will rejoin the band after nearly 6 years. Will Nirvana's legacy be enough for them to take the crown, or will STP pull off the upset? Weezer vs. Boston-Day 3

Muse was no match for rock great Rage Against the Machine in our 2nd round, with Rage taking 2/3 (6-2) of the vote. Next round we have classic rock legend Boston going up against alt-rockers Weezer. While Boston was one of the definite rock bands of the 70s and 80s, Weezer hails from the grunge days of the 90s, while they have changed their style in recent years. It's a classic matchup of old vs. new, so who will prevail? Check out their stuff below-

Rage Against the Machine vs. Muse-Day 2

Well Queens of the Stone Age just took a beating from legend Metallica which a vote of 7-1. Let's see if another rock legend, Rage Against the Machine, can hold up against newcomer Muse. The guitar solos of Tom Morello make the band who they are, along with Zack de la Rocha's anti-political lyrics. If Muse has anything to prove in this competition, it'll have to be through this first match-up. Sample some of their stuff below-
